So Big: One-Hundred-Word Story

She was six the first time. Eleanor gave all her dolls to a classmate whose family lost everything in a fire. At sixteen, she handed over her coat to a homeless woman. “Why did you do that, E?” asked her mom. Eleanor looked puzzled, “Because she’s about my size.” Her heart was so big, the family had to watch closely, lest she give away everything.
The dog appeared out of nowhere. Eleanor swerved to miss it, never seeing the oncoming traffic. Strangers joined family and friends at her crowded funeral. “Her heart was so big,” said the formerly homeless woman.
