
It was on the ground outside my dentist’s office: an old toothbrush. Bringing it inside, I showed the receptionist. “Look what I found out front.” She sighed, “That makes the third one this week.” Another patient leaned in. “I read all about this! A Houston dental clinic found thirteen on their front doorstep. Oral scientists call it the ‘Return of the Enamel Scrubbers’-retired brushes migrating home.” We all stared at the battered plastic handle with the worn flattened bristles. The receptionist picked it up with a tissue and dropped it in the biohazard bin. “Well,” she said, “welcome home.”
