Carol sits in a sunny restaurant booth. Looking out the window, she fixates on a pickup with a white camper shell. It’s her home now, since she became unemployed. The manager allows her to sit in the eatery, providing her with free water and day-old pastries. Thump! she’s startled as a bird flies into the reflective window. It lies motionless on the ground. “Me too,” whispers Carol. She’s staring at the bird, thinking about her own broken hopes, when it begins to move. Soon, it flies away. Carol senses someone beside her. It’s the manager: “Do you want a job?”
