Cedar Surprise | Drabble

From inside the house I heard it, a high-pitched whistle, “Tssee.” It was soft, almost electrical, and coming from the western redcedar out front. I looked out the window and saw the tall tree filled with birds. But what kind? Walking out slowly under the needle-covered canopy, I looked up. It was dozens of Cedar Waxwings eating the tree’s bluish seed cones–the ones no other birds can stomach. Suddenly, they all flew away at the exact same time. I waited for them to come back, but they never did. It was just a moment in time, but it was real.

    lovely Waxwings 👌

The American ones are different coloured to the European ones. We only see them as rare winter visitors in Scotland.

I don’t remember what season it was when the waxwings came through our front garden . My mother and grandmother were both birders, so I knew what they were. Thank you for be a regular reader and commenter on my latest little blog. 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸
